Amish love Solar Energy

Friday, April 17, 2009 by Craig Zamary
The Amish know how to define solar energy. I heard on NPR that in the world's largest Amish community, which is located in Holmes County, Ohio 80% of Amish families have solar panels.

What? That was my initial reaction. I live in Ohio, and I have seen Amish people riding in their horse drawn buggies, living without electricity, hang dry their clothes outside, use wood to heat their homes and cook their food, etc.
Eco friendly living - define solr energyThe Amish refuse to hook up to the power grid, but are using solar energy as opposed to natural gas or kerosene for safety reasons.
Over the years, there have been many house fires resulting from fuel lamps, and the switch to solar is a safer option and also opens the door for additional power. There are also new laws requiring Amish to have lights on their buggies.

I believe the Amish are probably some of the greenest people in the US, and by using renewable energy from the sun, they continue to be a sustainable community that has a new way to define solar energy.

Maybe in the near future, the Amish will convert their horse drawn buggies to all electric drawn buggies.
