There are a lot of new Sustainability Programs and green degrees you can get certification in an area of interest.

According to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, there are now more than 100 majors, minors or certificates were created this year in energy and sustainability-focused programs at colleges big and small. And this is nationwide.

There has been a huge increase in the number of companies going green and the rise in green jobs. Academic institutions are offering Sustainability Programs, renewable energy-solar certificate programs, certified organic farming programs and more.

The people who are getting the certifications, experience and training in the green jobs sector are setting themselves up for being educated in the right place for a long time.

The reality is that sustainable management is not just for green jobs, but nearly every job will involve some aspect of sustainability in order for companies to compete. In Fall 2009, UW-Extension brought together the strengths of four different University of Wisconsin campuses—UW-Parkside, UW-River Falls, UW-Stout and UW-Superior—to craft a degree that equips workers with the management skills they will need to lead sustainable business strategy. The new, online Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Management enrollment figures were nearly twice what was originally anticipated. These figures confirm that an online green degree appeals widely to a broad range of returning students who realize that tomorrow's workforce will need to think differently about the future. Tomorrow's workforce will need to be systems thinkers: they'll need an understanding of environmental science, business, climate legislation, natural resource management and triple bottom line accounting in order to compete in the new economy.
