Bird Friendly Garden Designs

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 by Guest Blogger
Benefits of Attracting Birds

Designing a garden to attract birds is an excellent idea and has many benefits that you may not have considered. Birds are fun to watch and they add beauty to your garden, but there are other environmentally and people friendly reasons to design a garden to attract birds.

Some of the reasons you may want to consider designing a garden to attract birds include:
  • Soil conservation – some plants used in landscaping can help to prevent soil erosion
  • Increased wildlife populations – various species of birds will flock to your garden
  • Natural insect control – birds eat insects so naturally the more birds you have the better insect control you will have in your garden
  • Educational opportunities – children and adults alike will have the opportunity to view and learn about many different types of birds and plants
  • Food production – many of the plants that attract birds also produce foods that humans can eat
Now that you know a few of the benefits of designing a garden to attract birds it will be important to know the necessary elements to incorporate into the design of your garden.

Garden Elements that Attract Birds

  • Bird Feeders - Bird feeders are one of the easiest and least expensive elements that you can add to your garden to attract birds. You can use a feeder that hangs from a tree or you could opt for a free standing feeder. By using several different kinds of bird seed you can attract various types of birds. You may attract birds such as sparrows, robins, and doves.
  • Bird Friendly Plants - Certain types of plants will attract birds to your garden. Some plants will be a place of shelter for the birds while others will provide a haven for mating and nesting. Plants such as berry trees will be a food source for birds. Plants that are bird friendly include things such as: creeping vines, holly bushes, butterfly bushes, larkspur, and evening primrose. Flowers that are nectar producing and brightly colored attract birds such as hummingbirds.
  • Water Features - Water features not only provide a place from which the birds can drink or in which they can bathe, but water features will also provide aesthetic appeal to your garden. Small fountains, bird baths, or a dish of water on the ground will all be sufficient water features.

Entrepreneurship in Michigan

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Guest Blogger
In Michigan, DTE Energy & the University of Michigan put on a Clean Energy Prize Competition for students.

Currently, 8 Teams have advanced to the Semi-finals, and according to a press release from DTE Energy, the new business ideas range from:
  • A system to enhance electric vehicle batteries
  • A new method to produce a gas used in solar cell production
  • Plans for turning food waste into fuel and more!
What do the students have to do? Teams have to develop business plans that promise to move a new, clean-energy technology from the laboratory to the market place.

How much $ is at stake? 1st Prize $50,000 2nd Place gets $25,000  3rd Place - $10,000 and 4th Place $7,000.

Below is what each of the 8 Teams are doing:
  • Advanced Battery Control: offers a proprietary smart battery management system, which will radically enhance battery utilization in electric vehicles.
  • Carbon Perks: a service that motivates people to incorporate energy efficient practices into their lifestyles while helping utilities reduce the costs of providing peak power.
  • Enertia: brings to market a multiple patent-pending innovation that will harness ambient kinetic energy and extend the lifetime of wireless electronic devices tenfold, while at the same time replacing toxic electrochemical batteries.
  • Food Waste Energy: manufactures and installs anaerobic biodigestors that help restaurants save energy and waste disposal costs by producing natural gas from food waste on site.
  • Green Silane: produces silane gas for customers on-site in a manner that is flexible, low-cost, and environmentally benign, revolutionizing the supply chain for this critical input to semiconductor, flat-screen display and photovoltaic panel production.
  • Ice Mitigating Systems: developed a two-fold approach to counter the effects of ice on offshore wind turbines. The solution, which addresses the turbine blades and its structural foundation, will be licensed to manufacturers and the company will provide the necessary consulting services to implement these systems.
  • ReGenerate: manufactures and leases modular anaerobic digestors to institutional food service operators, transforming food waste discards into on-site renewable energy as well as nutrient-rich fertilizer products that will be cobranded and sold through retail outlets.

E-ZPass is Green

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 by Craig Zamary

We often look at ways to save on fuel, alternative fuel ideas, tire pressure, hybrid electric cars, etc. And at the same time, we overlook additional ways to save fuel, time and money. Well, you can do this with E-ZPass.

What is E-ZPass? E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system which takes cash, coins and toll tickets out of the toll collection process. Instead, drivers prepay tolls and attach a small electronic device to their vehicles. Tolls are automatically calculated and deducted from the prepaid accounts as E-ZPass customers pass through the toll lanes.

E-ZPass Two Green Thumbs Up Award
Green Energy TV gave E-ZPass the Two Green Thumbs Up Award and here's why:

  • E-ZPass can process 250 to 300 percent more vehicles per lane, thus reducing toll plaza delays and traffic congestion.
  • E-ZPass helps to reduce congestion and reduce auto emissions.
  • E-ZPass helps reduce fuel consumption.

Obama Alternative Energy? - Nuclear Power

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 by Guest Blogger
We have heard many "green" speeches, but how green is Nuclear Power? Many people talk about Obama Alternative Energy, but usually that is or has to deal with green and renewable or alternative energy.

Nuclear power is not as safe as solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, etc. If there is a leak in a nuclear power plant, there are huge problems and negative environmental effects. If a solar panel breaks, you sweep it up, or if a wind turbine falls or breaks down, you replace it.

Nuclear power may be efficient and used in France and many other countries, but if something breaks, the effects are catastrophic.  - Caleb Morgan, Guest Blogger for Green Energy TV.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 by Craig Zamary
I saw a recent newsletter from the Civic Innovation Lab out of Cleveland, Ohio that one of the companies they funded is offering Low-tech solar panels to developing nations.

The newsletter stated that around the world 1.6 billion people do not have access to electricity. Cleveland-area native Christopher Clark wants to change that.

The 26-year-old Clark founded Sunflower Solutions after becoming aware of the rampant lack of power in developing areas and the myriad problems that stem from living without electricity.

Green Energy TV has given his company the Two Green Thumbs Up Award for his energy innovation, green inventions, being one of the best green companies and their eco friendly products that give a new way to define solar energy. Largest urban farm in the world

Thursday, January 21, 2010 by Guest Blogger

John Hantz, the $100 million dollar man has a very unique vision for the city of Detroit.

That vision is to take Detroit and convert the unused space into farmland. He was featured in a Fortune article recently, and talked about launching his idea into action and putting up $30 million of his own money to jump start the project.

Most people who are familiar with Detroit have seen abandoned buildings, homes selling for $15,000, and not too much going on.

The article also talked about how Detroit was once the 4th largest city in the US and how the population used be 2 million people, and is now at 900,000 and continues to decline.

In a tough economy, and a time when cities that are going downhill need to look at reinventing themselves, John Hantz has come up with a plan that has the potential to turn Detroit around and become one of the top green cities in the US and create green jobs and sustainability programs for the city. - Jack Clemens, Guest Blogger for Green Energy TV

Starbucks doesn't Recycle?

Thursday, January 21, 2010 by Guest Blogger

Dear Starbucks,

I walked across campus today, was tired and walked into a Starbucks. I asked for a iced coffee, and yes, I forgot my reuseable mug, and they handed me a coffee in a plastic cup.

I drank it, read a book and looked for a recycling bin. None were found. I went to the counter and asked the workers if they have a recycling bin for my plastic cup and they said no, even the manager shook his head no.

Why not? Look, I am no treehugger, but I believe in recycling. I should have been using my resuseable mug, but forgot it. I was very surprised and maybe it was just this location that did not have it. I looked into Starbucks sustainability programs and also on their site their Environmental Stewardship page talked about the great things they are doing.

Starbucks companies going greenThe one thing that was missing was recycling bins in many of their stores. This could help prevent millions of cups from entering landfills. There are many companies going green and doing great things to reduce energy consumption, water usage, etc., but sometimes even they forget the easiest green measures to put in place, a recycling bin.

I took the cup back to campus, put it in a recycling bin, and will not forget my mug in the future! - Jenny M., Guest Blogger for Green Energy TV

Why Dogs are Dying from Chemical Toxins

Monday, November 23, 2009 by Guest Blogger
I have 4 dogs, and I love them. I have been doing a lot of research on behalf of my university and have found some scary info. Did you ever wonder why so many dogs have allergies now and why the rate of cancer in dogs is at an all time high?

More and more dogs get diagnosed with cancer every year. Some experts believe its from the drops used to prevent fleas and ticks since there are some very strong chemical toxins in that medication.

My research is showing that there are other chemical toxins that our dogs are being exposed to that are driving up the number of cancer rates, and number of dogs who now have allergies.

Dogs dying from Chemical ToxinsThe Answer is right under our pet's nose
:
  1. Grass - How many people use fertilizer to get the perfect looking lawn now as opposed to how many people used it 30 years ago? Do you know the dangerous chemical toxins that are in lawn fertilizers and our dogs nose is constantly on the grass, sniffing or they are laying in the grass. READ THE BACK LABEL OF YOUR FERTILIZER next time before you apply it to your yard. You can research the ingredients and see the warnings that cause reproduction issues, kills aquatic life, etc. When your dog comes in your home, he/she is bringing those into your house too.
  2. Your Home - Unless you use eco friendly products to clean your home, then you and your pet are being exposed to the chemical toxins in the floor, bathroom, and kitchen cleaners. These cleaners are known to cause cancer in lab tests.
  3. Food - What is your dog eating? Check out the ingredients on the back of your dog food back and look them up, you will not believe the cancer causing agents that go into your pet's food.
Solutions: Organic lawn care and chemical free lawn care. There are a lot of organic lawn care products out there so you can keep your beautiful green grass without exposing yourself and your pet to the chemical toxins found in leading brand name fertilizers.

You can also switch to using chemical free cleaning products such as Seventh Generation, Shaklee and other eco friendly products. - Mike Stanford, Guest Blogger for Green Energy TV.
