Green Alternative to using Viagra

Monday, May 17, 2010 by Guest Blogger
I just saw the news from KTLA about the "Vegetable Viagra" for men.

The article talked about how instead of using Viagra, men should start eating celery. The authors of a new health book called "Stay Young: Ten Proven Steps to Ultimate Health" claim that eating celery boosts the pheromone levels in a man's sweat, making him more appealing to the fairer sex.

This is a green alternative to taking Viagra, but it did not say that celery helps men "get it up", so I am not sure about the comparison of being like "Vegetable Viagra".

According to the story, apparently, celery contains androstenone, a naturally occurring steroid, which increases pheromone secretion, according to the doctors and women will be attracted to men when your body secretes these scents.

Maybe I should start bottling celery as a new green cologne.

Vermicomposting Guide: Different Types of Composting Worms

Tuesday, April 27, 2010 by Guest Blogger
It is important that even before you start doing vermicomposting, you are already familiar with the different types of composting worms.  By doing so, you will have an idea on the worms that you will be using as you go along the process.  This knowledge is also important as this will determine how effective your worm composting will be.

To start, there are famous composting worms which include Red http://www.gardenworms.com/  Red Wiggler worms(Eisenia Fetida), European Night Crawlers (Eisenia hortensis) and Canadian Nightcrawler (Lumbricus rubellus).  Among the four, Red Wiggler worms are the most recommended type of composting worms because of their tested and proven special characteristics.

They are able to burrow up to 2 inches giving the soil enough air and they are also literally heavy eaters of organic materials.  According to study, Red worms are able to eat as much as their body weight paving way for more organic fertilizers.  The end product of the Red Wiggler worms is also outstanding because their wastes are filled with nutrients essential for the plants.

Meanwhile, European Night Crawlers, though effective in worm composting are more recommended as fishing baits.  Their large size makes them function better as baits rather than composting worms.  Canadian Night Crawlers on the other hand are also soil dwellers though Red Wiggler worms seem to have shown more special attributes.

If you plan to start vermicomposting at home, your choice of composting worms matters a lot.

Composting worms play the most critical part so your choice will definitely reflect the end product which is of course the vermicompost.

Soy Print - Best green companies

Friday, April 17, 2009 by Craig Zamary
Sometimes the best green companies are not just right under our nose, but inside our printers. A company by the name of Print Recovery Concepts, Inc. recognized the potential for soy toner in 2006. They brought their eco friendly products to market and their soy toner can replace millions of pounds of oil toner in laser printers.

Soy ink has been available for awhile, but this is the first time a soy-based option has been available in laser cartridges.
Best green companies - eco friendly products
So what are the benefits of using Soy Print?
  • According to industry leaders, it takes about 2 liters of oil to make the one pound of toner powder required for each oil-based cartridge
  • U.S. businesses, institutions and governmental bodies consume more than 100 million cartridges per year. That equates to 100 million pounds or 50,000 tons of material we currently use petroleum to produce.
Debe Overhaug, president of Print Recovery Concepts, Inc., reports the print quality matches current brand name cartridges. She further states each cartridge prints the same number of pages as the oil-based versions and does no harm to the printer itself.

There are a lot of companies going green, sustainable schools, green campuses, schools going green and individuals interested in eco friendly living and they can do so with green inventions and eco friendly products such as Soy Print. If you have a laser printer, next time your ink is getting low, you might want to replace it with Soy Print instead. You can find Soy Print at http://www.soyprint.net

Drinking and work - Green Business Tips

Monday, April 6, 2009 by Craig Zamary
There are a lot of companies going green, and there are some quick green business tips that I can recommend for you.

I recently read that using a mug saves 500 disposable cups per person from being thrown away each year.

My advice: Get a mug! If you must have a plastic mug, then I personally recommend that you buy an coffee mug that is BPA free, or PVC free and try to keep the dangerous chemical toxins from entering into your favorite beverage.
Green Business Tips - Get a mugSee what BPA and PVC are below:
  • BPA - BPA is used in polycarbonate plastics and usually marked with recycling label #7.  It is a synthetic sex hormone that mimics estrogen.  According to the studies sponsored by U.S. National Institute of Environment Health Sciences, BPA can alter the normal function of genes.  The study warns that BPA exposure may be linked to increases in type 2 diabetes, prostate caner, breast cancer, early onset of puberty in girls, obesity, and neuro-behavioral.
  • PVC - PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic, commonly referred to as vinyl, is one of the most hazardous consumer products ever created.  PVC is dangerous to human health and the environment throughout its entire life cycle, at the factory, in our homes, and in the trash.  Our bodies are contaminated with poisonous chemicals released during the PVC lifecycle, such as mercury, dioxins, and phthalates, which may pose irreversible life-long health threats.  When produced or burned, PVC plastic releases dioxins, a group of the most potent synthetic chemicals ever tested, which can cause cancer and harm the immune and reproductive systems. A Droplet could power New York City for 1 day

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 by Craig Zamary
Angels & Demons, author, Dan Brown started his book off with a page labeled Fact. The world's largest scientific research facility--Switzerland's Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN)-- recently succeeded in producing the first particles of antimatter.

It goes on to talk about how Antimatter creates no pollution or radiation, and a droplet could power New York City for a full day. - (Source: Angels & Demons).

I have read all of Dan Brown's books:
  • The Da Vinci Code
  • Deception Point
  • Digital Fortress
  • Angels & Demons
Illuminati Angels & Demons CERNI started reading Angels & Demons again the other night and the Fact (page) really caught my attention this time regarding what Dan Brown wrote about CERN. CERN was also noted (not in the fact page of the book) for being the birthplace of the World Wide Web. A character in the book goes on to say that the World Wide Web was a small accomplishment as opposed to the work CERN has produced.

And then the story line went on to talk about a dead body with Illuminati carved across his chest...

Anyhow, it's a great read, but what interests me is the droplet of antimatter that could power New York City for a full day. Dan Brown's Angels & Demons book came out over 9 years ago, and I am sure CERN has made a lot of progress since then on their droplet.

What advances have they made, and were they able to make the antimatter stable? If so, how will our world change when the source of energy is droplets of antimatter, which would replace all current energy sources we use and will be able to power the world? Talk about an energy innovation, CERN would easily make my list for Best Green Companies!

Save Organic Natural Foods

Monday, March 2, 2009 by Lucy Zamary

I may describe my personal experience about a specific product that I’ve used, but do not generally like to speak negatively about a company in whole.  However, I detest Monsanto.  Yes, I’ve said it.  It is one company I wish to never do business with. Monsanto has been known for the following:

• Monsanto was heavily involved in creating the very first nuclear bomb in the Manhattan Project.
• In the 60’s Monsanto entered into a partnership with IG Farben, a German chemical firm that was the financial core of the Hitler regime.
• For nearly 40 years, the company willingly and knowingly dumped chemical toxin called PCB in a small town in Alabama.
• Monsanto was the main supplier of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.  Agent Orange is a code name for a very powerful herbicide and defoliant initially used to reduce the dense jungle in Vietnam.  Monsanto’s Agent Orange had dioxin level several times higher than other manufacturers and knew about the severe health problems associated with the chemical.  It has been showed that the company presented EPA with false documentation regarding the herbicide.  Agent Orange affected 4.8 million Vietnamese, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities and over 500,000 babies born with deformities.
• Monsanto uses fear and bully methods through their “spies” to monitor small farmers across the country and the world.
• In 1998, India was forced to accept Monsanto’s seeds and since caused more than 25,000 suicides due to the company’s forced methods of farming.

Now, what does a company like this have to do with our eco friendly living?  Monsanto probably has the biggest influence over our food intake than any other company out there.  Although, the US Patent and Trademark Office refused to grant patens on life-forms, citing there are too many variables, in 1980, the Supreme Court sided with a scientist at General Electric to grant a patent on “a live human-made microorganism” to clean up oil spill.  Even though the patent wasn’t for a seed, the precedent has been set to seek patents on life-forms.  Since then, Monsanto has been diligent in obtaining patents on their seeds and this is how Monsanto has affected our food supplies:

• Monsanto is the maker of Round Up, a very popular herbicide to control weeds.
• The company creates Genetically Modified seeds that have been injected with the herbicide in to the genetic makeup so that the Round Up spraying does not affect the crops.  Instead of the organic method of tilling to remove the weeds, the crops have been drenched with this carcinogenic herbicide.
• Any farmers who purchase seeds from Monsanto must sign an agreement stating that they will not save the seeds to harvest in the future, thus making farmers completely dependent on Monsanto.
• Monsanto claims that their GMO seeds have higher yields of production, when in fact; this has been proven wrong over and over again.
• In smaller countries, such as India that were forced to use GMO seeds from Monsanto, many could not sustain their farms due to low yield and annual seed purchasing.
• Monsanto’s GMO seeds can end up in neighboring organic and non-GMO farms through open pollination and bird dropping.  Monsanto has known to sue and win against these farmers for patent infringement and usage of their GMO seeds even though it is the organic natural foods that have been ruined.  Monsanto claims that even though the farmer may not have used their seeds, but due to the pollination, the “gene” of the new crop now belongs to them.
• 90% of the GMO crops grown in the fields are Monsanto seeds.
• Many countries ban the use of Monsanto’s GMO seeds.
• GMO products may increase the natural food toxins.
• Most countries have specific labeling requirement for foods that are GMO.  Most countries, except for the United States.
• Monsanto is the maker of Bovine Growth Hormones (rBGH) to be used on dairy cows for increase in milk production.  This hormone is banned in Europe, Canada and many parts of Asia as the studies show that the hormone is easily absorbed in humans.  The overproduction of the milk causes udder infection on cows, which leads to increased usage of antibiotics.  This growth hormone is widely used in the United States.  No long term studies have been done regarding the affects of the growth hormones ingested by humans.
• Small dairy farmers using the labeling, “No Bovine Growth Hormones” in their milk cartons have been sued by Monsanto that these farmers “should not have the right to inform their customers” that their milk does not have Monsanto chemicals.  These farmers were forced to remove the labeling and also settle out of court.
• Monsanto has the best network of “spies” known to many farmers as “Mafia” or “Gestapo” using scare tactics to control the farming, thus putting many small farmers out of business.
• Monsanto is working on patenting of livestock.

I cannot possibly list you all the alarming things about this company.  I am shocked and appalled that such a company can exist and continue to influence our food supplies.  Monsanto spends money and time claiming that their goal is to end world hunger by producing GMO’s that have higher crop yields.  However, this has been shown to be more of a PR ploy, rather than a scientific data.  Monsanto’s GMO seeds produce less than traditional methods and cause many farmers to go out of business due to annual seed purchasing required by the company.  It is so frustrating when I make every attempt to avoid purchasing GMO’s, the FDA continues to block any forms of specific labeling.  Whether you decide to purchase GMO products is your right.  I just wish I had that same right to make an informed decision through proper labeling of our foods.

Energy Innovation - Fast Bike "Green" Racing

Thursday, February 19, 2009 by Craig Zamary
In Battle Mountain, Nevada there is a contest that requires serious speed, intelligence and guts. It's called the Human Powered Speed Challenge. The people involved, race by using the human body as the engine, and are able to outperform many electric cars that are on the road and/or in prototype stages currently. This is a contest that can inspire others to dream of ways to harness our energy and create energy innovations.

Who knows, maybe when their top speeds reach over 100 mph, they might someday replace the way Nascar holds their races or the way we travel by car.

Recycle your Drugs

Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Craig Zamary

We know to recycle our paper, plastic, aluminum and other waste, but how many people recycle their drugs? A variety of drugs such as antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers, heart medicines, sex hormones and other medications have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

There are many ways that these drugs get into our drinking water. One way is that people take pills and their bodies absorb them and the rest passes through them and then flushed down the toilet. People also flush unused pills and liquid medicines down the toilet, down the sink or throw their unused medication in the garbage which ends up leaking into the ground at landfills and polluting our water.

In addition to human waste, other sources of contamination comes from pets who are treated with medication. Over $5 billion was spent over the last 5 years on medicine for pets. According to a USA Today article, Cattle, for example, are given ear implants that provide a slow release of trenbolone, an anabolic steroid used by some bodybuilders, which causes cattle to bulk up. But not all the trenbolone circulating in a steer is metabolized. A German study showed 10% of the steroid passed right through the animals.

Water sampled downstream of a Nebraska feedlot had steroid levels four times as high as the water taken upstream. Male fathead minnows living in that downstream area had low testosterone levels and small heads.

This makes me think that we are all sharing drugs in the long run, whether we like it or not. What can we do?

To start, contact your pharmacy. Many Pharmacies have Drug Recycling Programs where they take back your expired medications and properly dispose of them.  If you call them and they say they don't, then call around, because many pharmacies do take back expired or unused medicine.

Since expired medicine is considered hazardous waste by the EPA, you can contact your local hazardous waste facility to see what they recommend as well.   If you are aware of any other tips for people to help keep drugs out of our water supply, please share your comments below: - Stay Green!

Students design a car that gets 1,900 MPG

Thursday, November 20, 2008 by Craig Zamary

Manufacturers are struggling to get cars to average 40-50 mpg, but students from Cal Poly were able to design a car that gets 1,900 mpg. Even though the car is light-weight with it's eco friendly design and would get crushed if hit by an SUV, this is an outstanding achievement.

Maybe it’s time we consider moving from heavy cars to light-weight vehicles? If we change the way we travel, people could fill up their tanks and it could last for months, as opposed to days.

If everyone starting driving light-weight vehicles, we would level the playing field as well. This could potentially be a safer way to drive too, and in the event of a crash or accident, we would probably cut down on the number of deaths/injuries from cars that weigh thousands of pounds as opposed to a few hundred pounds.

It would of course cut down on our dependence on oil and materials used to make a car as well.  Watch the video below, and if you have any alternative energy videos, upload it to us: http://www.greenenergytv.com/Upload.aspx - Stay Green! Craig Zamary
