The California Gold Rush began in 1848 when gold was discovered by James Wilson Marshall in California. San Francisco went from a small town of tents to a boom-town where roads, churches and tens of thousands of people came to be part of the gold rush.
The new "Gold Rush" may now be green algae energy. There are companies such as Solazyme, who are taking algae and turning it into oil. The potential here is endless. Solazyme can convert algae, into diesel fuel, jet fuel, edible oils you could cook with, plastics, cosmetics, etc. Basically, anything that is made from or using oil, they can make via use of algae. Green algae energy has the potential to end our dependence on oil, create thousands of new green jobs, and produce more eco friendly products. Algae is one of the many alternative fuels programs out there, but I believe algae has the potential to be bigger than gold.
